Forty Below® K2 Superlight™ Overboot
"I wouldn't go to extreme altitude without them!" JIM WICKWIRE
Key Features:
Lightweight, compact, and not bulky.
Fits double plastic, plus single and double leather mountaineering boots.
Stretchy and easy to put on in the cold.
Easy to repair.

The Forty Below® K2 Superlight™ overboot is a great choice for extreme cold climbs.  A favorite insulated boot cover that has been used for many years on Denali, Himalayas, and Polar expeditions.  The unique design allows it to be used with a wide range of “step-in”, “new-matic”, and “strap-on” style crampon bindings, plus “wire toe bail style” ski mountaineering bindings.  Patterned to fit both plastic and leather mountaineering boots.  In addition to being used with double shelled boots for high altitude and cold weather climbs, they can also be fitted to leather climbing boots to help extend their temperature use range.  The Forty Below® K2 Superlight™ uses a special nylon covered, 4.7 mm stretchy closed cell neoprene foam insulation, with 2 layers of heat reflecting Titanium.  This insulation goes from about the top of your climbing boot, completely around and under the boot, with no gaps in the insulation.  The insulation panels are glued together and also stitched on the inside and outside surface, with no sewn through seams.  They fit trim to the boot, and are not bulky.  Because of the stretchy insulation material they are easy to put on in the cold, and they roll up small in your pack.  The toe and heel area have small triangular shape panels made of a slightly thinner neoprene insulation that allows for many wire toe bails and flip lever heels to simply compress the insulation and rest on the toe and heel groove of the boot.  The toe, heel, and lower side area of the overboots have a thin rubber paint applied to add abrasion resistance and help protect the stitching.  A 2 inch wide heavy duty velcro front closure goes all the way down to the toes for easy adjustment of laces.  The upper gaiter goes up to just below the knee, and is made of a non-coated, windproof and breathable Cordura nylon to help minimize frost build up.  Elastic drawcord top closure, with a cordlock on top of the gaiter.  A special smooth nylon crampon patch is glued and stitched to the instep side of the neoprene for added resistance to crampon pokes, etc.  One of the great features of Forty Below® overboots is that they are easy to repair! This is especially helpful, as crampons and rugged terrain are so hard on everything they come in contact with.  Repairing is easily done by simply gluing the poke holes together, using glues such as those for repairing neoprene fishing waders or wetsuits, like AquaSeal from McNett, etc.  For the fabric gaiter repairs, the iron-on style fabric patches work well and are really easy to put on, and can in many cases eliminate the need to sew patches on.  For repairs on the mountain, use the Forty Below® Repair Patches, which are a special sticky and stretchy tape that work great for repairs during a trip (one is included with the overboot).  SIZES: XS-XXXL: To fit from ladies 4 to mens 16.  Colors:  Black, or Red (red foot with black gaiter).  Weight: 21 oz. per pair size Large.

Forty Below® Purple Haze™ Overboot
Key Features:
Completely stretchy to fit a wide range of boot types.
Stretchy and easy to put on in the cold.
Fits climbing, ski-mountaineering, telemark, and snowboard boots.
Easy to repair.

The Forty Below® Purple Haze™ overboot is a completely stretchy insulated boot cover that is easy to put on boots.  A favorite insulated boot cover choice for use on Denali, Himalayas, and Polar expeditions.  Patterned to fit double plastic mountaineering boots, plus ski-mountaineering, telemark, and snowboard boots.  It is a very unique overboot in that it can stretch to fit easily over many of the large shell and cuffs of ski-mountaineering, telemark, and the large volume “combi-boots” such as those from Millet, La Sportiva, etc.  The Forty Below® Purple Haze™ model uses a special nylon covered, 4.7 mm stretchy neoprene closed cell foam insulation, with 2 layers of heat reflecting Titanium, which goes completely around and under the boot, with no gaps in the insulation.  The insulation panels are glued together, and also stitched on the inside and outside surface, with no sewn through seams.  They fit trim to the boot, and are not bulky.  They fit with a wide range of crampon binding styles such as “step-in”, “new-matic”, and  “strap-on” crampon bindings, as well as wire toe ski mountaineering bindings. The closure is in the front using a large size YKK® HEAVY DUTY zipper, with a flap underneath to help keep snow out.  One of the great features of Forty Below® overboots is that they are easy to repair! This is especially helpful, as crampons and rugged terrain are so hard on everything they come in contact with.  Repairing is easily done by simply gluing the poke holes together, using glues such as those for repairing neoprene fishing waders, wetsuits, like AquaSeal from McNett, etc.  For repairs on the mountain, use the Forty Below® Repair Patches, which are a special sticky and stretchy tape that works great for repairs during a trip (one is included with the overboot).  SIZES: XS, S, M, L, XL.  To fit from ladies 6 to mens 16.  Color:  Black.  Weight: 24 oz. per pair size Large.

Forty Below® MT. EverestOverboot

"THANKS FOR SAVING MY TOES!" John Roskelley

Key Features:
Thin rubber sole in addition to insulation adds durability in sole area.
For mountaineering, snowshoeing, winter camping.
Stretchy and easy to put on in the cold.
Easy to repair.

The Forty Below® Mt. Everest™ overboot is our original overboot model!  Used for a wide range of mountain activities from high altitude and extreme cold mountaineering, and recreational snowshoeing.  A thin rubber sole has been added in addition to the insulation for enhanced durability in the sole area, so it works great for use as an insulated boot cover for mountaineering, plus activities such as snowshoeing, boot cover for camp booties, etc.  This model works only with “strap-on” style crampon bindings, and strap style snowshoe bindings.  The insulation goes from about the top of your boot completely around and under your boot, and is made of a 4.7mm stretchy closed cell nylon covered neoprene wetsuit type material, with 2 layers of heat reflecting Titanium.  The insulation panels are glued together, and stitched on the inside and outside surface, with no sewn through seams.  They fit trim to the boot, and are not bulky.  This special insulation is flexible, for a great fit on your boot and easy on and off.  The upper part is made of non-coated Cordura nylon to help minimize frost build up.  The front closure is 2 inch wide heavy duty Velcro, and there is an elastic drawstring closure around the top.  The toes, heel and lower side area have a painted on rubber material for enhanced abrasion resistance.  A nylon crampon patch is glued and stitched on the instep side of the neoprene for added resistance to crampon pokes, etc.  One of the great features of Forty Below® overboots is that they are easy to repair! The neoprene insulation is also easy to repair, especially as crampons and rugged terrain are so hard on everything they come in contact with. Repairing is easily done by simply gluing the poke holes together, using glue for repairing neoprene fishing waders, wetsuits, AquaSeal glue from McNett, etc.  For fabric repairs the iron-on fabric patches work well and are really easy to put on, and can in many cases eliminate sewing.  For repairs on the mountain, use the Forty Below® Repair Patches which are a special sticky and stretchy tape that works great for repairs during a trip (one is included with the overboot).  Color: Black.  SIZES: 11 sizes to fit from ladies 4.5 to mens 16!  Weight: 28oz. per pair size large.

A unique overboot that helps extend the range of trail running and light hiking boots in a variety of cold weather wilderness conditions.  With the addition of this dynamic featured insulated boot cover, you can have a pair of lightweight base footwear be layered on top of, similar to the classic layering system of clothing, now for your feet! The Light Energy™ overboots are designed to be a very lightweight and compact approach to a boot cover.  They are slender fitting- so they are not bulky or cumbersome, stretchy and easy to put on in the cold, and also easy to repair.

There are a wide range of uses, including keeping snow out of your boots, adding insulation around the foot, enabling a set of hiking boots or trail running shoes to be used for lightweight snowshoeing, putting them on as a cover for camp booties while winter snow camping, and many more!  We have had several very unique trips that have used the Forty Below Light Energy overboots as part of the development.  A vary unique trip by Andrew Skurka used two different test pairs on his remarkable Coast to Coast C2C walk, used on over 1,000 miles with his light weight trail shoes in the Midwest States during the winter months with snowshoes.  The Wilderness Classroom Group used test pairs on a several hundred mile dogsled/snowshoe/ cross country ski trip in Canada.  ( see links to these folks websites in our links page).  The Cascades Mountain Range , and especially Mt. Rainier which we are located next to, has been our “local use zone”.  We have a very long snow season, and have had numerous trips over the past several years with various versions, in a wide range of snow types, and conditions.  They have really helped footwear to be used in a much wider environment than without them.  It is important to point out that by adding and using these overboots the user must determine the suitability of the set up to be functional for the intended use.

The Forty Below® Light Energy TR model™ are insulated with a stretchy nylon covered closed-cell neoprene foam that is 3mm thick.  This provides insulation that doesn’t absorb moisture and is stretchy to allow for a range of different shoe shapes and clothing.  The sole uses a thin rubber dot fabric that remains flexibility in the extreme cold, such as 40 below temperatures, and provides a small amount of traction.  The upper gaiter has stretchy side panels that accommodate a range of different clothing combinations and is breathable to allow perspiration moisture to escape.  The rear calf area of the gaiter is made with a coated nylon fabric, specifically to help reduce the melting of snow seeping through from the snow buildup from snowshoes that gets kicked up.  The front closure goes all the way to the toe area, and is 1 inch wide hook and loop.  Elastic and cord lock top closure with a snap and grab tab.  A 10mm thick closed cell foam pad for the inside bottom is included and is removable.  This ability to remove and vary the sole insulation gives a wide range of different fits with different footwear, the ability to add or subtract the insulation to vary it according to your needs.  You can also add the Forty Below® Simple Slipper™ to your footwear and then put that grouping inside the overboot, and have an even wider use range.  Two other helpful techniques are: 1) add the small flexible heat packets inside, and if you have the type with adhesive on the back of them, just stick them to the inside of the overboot in the toe area as an example. 2) for added traction consider using the rubber and cleat sole products such as from the Get a Grip/ Sure Foot company, and light crampons such as from Kahtoola.

One of the great features of Forty Below® overboots is that they are easy to repair! This is especially helpfull, as crampons and rugged terrain are so hard on everything they come in contact with.  Repairing is easily done by simply gluing the poke holes together, using glues such as those for repairing neoprene fishing waders and wetsuits, like AquaSeal from McNett, etc.  For repairs while on a trip, use the Forty Below® Repair Patches, which are a special sticky and stretchy tape that works great for repairs during a trip (one is included with the overboot).

The “FORTY BELOW® VEST™”
A truly revolutionary clothing piece!  The Forty Below® Vest™ is great for folks who sweat a lot and are trying to reduce moisture buildup in the insulating layers between your back and the backpack.  Designed as a "zone vapor barrier" to keep perspiration moisture from accumulating in the layers of clothing between you and your pack.  Ever take your pack off to find an excess amount of water in your back insulation, only to quickly turn to ice?  This vest will help eliminate most of this problem.  Wear The Forty Below® Vest™ on top of a synthetic underwear layer and then layer your insulation on top.  The Forty Below® Vest is best suited for long trips in extreme cold conditions.  When you are done with your activity, you can take off the vest and freeze-dry the perspiration off the inside back.  Moisture that will be in your base layer is much easier to dry than to try and get it out of a thick fleece or insulated jacket.  Use this vest also as a sit pad or extra insulation under your torso while sleeping.  We also use it for watersports activities, as it is a great way to add insulation under a PFD.  The back is a thin neoprene foam that is rubber on the back side, and nylon on the inside.  The front of the Forty Below® Vest™ is made of a medium weight synthetic fleece material that is warm yet allows moisture to wick well and dry fast.  Two front pockets, a heavy duty zipper, shorter cut in the front to help keep out of the way of hip belts and climbing harnesses, longer cut in the back to help insulate the lower back.
"...anyone who has carried a pack and sweated and soaked their insulation, which then froze or didn't dry should realize what an advantage this radical product could be in your climbing wardrobe.  I give it a 9 on a scale of 1 to 10" Marc Twight  Rock and Ice magazine Product Review, February 1993  SIZES: S, M, L, XL,XXL.  Weight: 18 oz. size Medium.

Article #1: "Expedition Brewing, Himalayan Style"
By Joel Attaway, Forty Below Ltd

Cho Oyu peak, Himalaya

Summer 1996
Brew Altitude:15,500
Location: Mountain: Cho Oyu 26,906 Himalayas, Ra Chhu Valley, Near Nangpa La, using spring melt water from the Gyabragg Glacier.

Glacier Participants:
On Site Brewers: Eric Simonson, John Race, International Mountain Guides, Pemba Sherpa.
Development and Technical Support:  Joel Attaway, Forty Below, Ltd.

One of the most appreciated toasts is for the accomplishment of a personally significant mountaineering summit!  Expeditions that last a few months require that you take everything you need.  Making beer on these long expeditions may be the only choice you have to be able to enjoy this luxury!  This is especially appreciated when the country or location visiting is remote.

In 1996 Eric Simonson of International Mountain Guides (IMG) based in Ashford, Washington and I had a discussion about homebrew making of beer on a climbing expedition as a possible solution to a particular old problem (no beer).  Eric was developing plans for a climbing expedition to climb the world’s 6th highest peak, Cho Oyu elevation 26,906 ft. located in Tibet.  Beer is a very rare commodity and difficult to bring along. Usually a locally made fermented drink called “Chang” is made by the Nepalese,  which is made of a combination of barley, corn, rice and millet, and while unique and high alcohol, just doesn’t hold a candle to the brew we are used to!

A setup had to come together to make beer on a long wilderness trip, in a foreign country, at altitude, and, most of all, had to fit on the back of a Yak!

Map of Cho Oyu and Everest region

Yes, the beast of burden for many high altitude trips in the Himalayas is the Yak!  The last part of the big haul to the base camps are by the Yak.

Road to Basecamp and Yak

Each yak can carry about 120 pounds, and has to carry the load over rough rocky terrain, crossing rivers and snow-clad glaciers.

We envisioned using a beer ingredient kit of liquid malt, strong yeast, and “bottle” in the Quoin Party Pig Kegs.  Boiling water from a glacier snowmelt stream in one of the big cook kettles.  Fermentation in a strong plastic barrel, and bottled in the 2.5 gallon plastic Party Pig, of course with the Forty Below Pig Parka on to help keep it just the right temperature!

Base camp is established at 15,500 feet elevation just below the terminus of the Gyabragg Glacier.

The Brewery Tent

Eric Simonson and Pemba Sherpa ready to brew!

A big cook tent is erected, and the water for the beer is collected from the Gyabragg Glacier springs.  The water coming from the river at the end of a glacier is full of what is called glacier silt, made from the grinding of the glacier ice on the bedrock it sits on.  This silty water is not functional to drink, or use in making beer.  The clear water from springs is brought to a boil, and the can of liquid malt is warmed in some hot water to help it pour easier in the cold temperature of camp.

Strong Ale for strong climbers!

Pouring the warmed malt

Boiling at 15,500 feet!

The malt and hot water is brought to a boil, hop pellets added, then, the wort is cooled in the nearby handy ice and meltwater of the glacier.

Cooling the wort in the ice cold glacier water!

The yeast is added, and the bucket is covered by a Forty Below® Carboy Parka™ and inserted into an insulated barrel.

Fermenter with FB Carboy Parka and put into barrell.

Fermentation takes hold and lasted about 2 weeks.  The brew is transferred to another bucket and allowed to settle for a few days.  For the bottling, the self pressurizing Quoin Party Pig worked great as it uses a self expanding pouch inside the plastic “Pig” and this allows for safe storage, and keeps the beer at perfect pressure.

Getting ready to pour

The spring loaded nozzle makes for easy dispensing. The team successfully summited the peak, and upon return to basecamp really appreciated the “High Altitude Ale" that helped them celebrate their success.

Cheers!

A small bottle with a flip close lid was brought home for us to share.  It was a nice dark color, and had good body, and was quite refreshing.  One of the first comments from the returning party was “how can we make more next time!”  A true "summit" in expedition high altitude brewing!
